Impact of reporting improper conduct

Reporting improper conduct is an important step in improving integrity in NT public administration. Reporting helps the Commissioner to understand integrity risks and develop prevention strategies.

Reports referred to public bodies for action can assist those bodies to understand and respond to improper conduct within their organisation. When a matter is referred to a public body, directions may be given requiring that body to report on any action taken and the outcome of those actions.

If the Commissioner investigates a matter, he may prepare an investigation report with findings and recommendations. Any such reports are furnished in accordance with the ICAC Act.

The Commissioner can monitor how recommendations are implemented.

The Commissioner cannot prosecute people for criminal conduct or discipline a public officer. He can prepare a brief of evidence for law enforcement agencies, such as the police and the Director of Public Prosecutions, but he is not responsible for prosecution of an individual and cannot direct the police or DPP in relation to a prosecution.
